The Arts Centre Market comes alive with the sights and sounds of artists, musicians, buskers and craftspeople.  Visitors from out of town enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and it is a fantastic place to spend some time especially on a sunny day.

You will find over 80 stalls there with an ever-changing mix of top quality New Zealand-made goods, including jewellery, clothing, woodwork, ceramics, flax and paua work, soaps and glassware and a favourite – Fudge cottage.

The market is a great place to grab something to eat from the Market’s international food fair.  There is live entertainment in the Market Square, along Worcester Boulevard and in the south quad.

The arts centre is set on the old University site in an array of heritage buildings located between Worcester Boulevard and Hereford Street. The back of the Market is opposite the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, on the tram route and just over the road from the Christchurch Museum.

Christchurch Accommodation nearby includes a variety of bed and breakfasts (including quite a few heritage buildings), backpackers and it is close by to a selection of hotels.

If you are looking for Christchurch New Zealand accommodation of the backpacker’s variety, then X Base hostel is one that you should consider.

The Christchurch X Base hostel is situated right in Cathedral Square, the centre of Christchurch city.  It is convenient for shops, cafes and with an airport bus stopping right outside the door, great for global travellers.

I went and asked for a tour of Base Christchurch to gain an idea of what it would be like to stay there.  The Base is in an older building that has been converted well with the usual nooks and crannies to give it some personality.

When I went there it was the coldest time of year and not a particularly nice day so it did seem a bit dull.  However, in my opinion the Base is better than a lot a backpacker’s.

The Base has a penthouse accommodation that is well set up for groups.

One thing that appealed to me was the Sanctuary, an exclusive girl’s only multi-share dorms area.  The area even smelt different – more girly!

I approached a tourist from Europe and asked her to give me a rating.  She did say that she could not compare with the Christchurch hostels and this was based on her hostel experiences overall.  She gave it a 6/10.

This Christchurch backpacker’s has a variety of accommodation with multi-share dorms, private and family rooms available.  There are communal areas with well-equipped kitchen, laundry and chill out zones.

There is a good sized computer room with high speed Internet facilities and web cams available.  Sky TV is available in two TV rooms.

Base Christchurch is part of a chain of hostels throughout New Zealand and Australia.  You can go Base jumping around New Zealand, by purchasing a Base jumping package for 10 nights with the eleventh night free.

When you stay at the Base hostels, the cost of your bed includes one free drink in the bar, for each night you stay.  All Base hostels have bars and entertainment facilities.  These hostels will really suit those who like to party.
