    What about San Francisco? Flights take 16-20 hours from both locations, and there is plenty to do. Also, petrol is cheaper if cost is an issue.

    Singapore would be the obvious choice!

    My brother lives in Christchurch and he’s also from the Toon.

    Singapore Airlines stop over in Singapore, en route from London to Christchurch.
