A devastating 6.3 magnitude shock on 22nd February 2011 caused destruction all around Christchurch city, in particular the Central Business District (CBD) and a number of suburbs have been wiped out. 181 people have been confirmed dead as a result of that aftershock. The central city has been dramatically changed and there is question as to whether it will be rebuilt in the same place.

Our city has been turned upside down and many people have left in search of calmer residences. Most people remain living in the city although I would expect it has at least passed through most people’s minds as to whether to stay or leave.

Stainless steel bowls are the new ‘in’ here as we are all sick of cleaning up broken glass.

The latest conversation is around whether you live in the green, orange, red or white zone all dependent upon the state of the land your house is built on. Green is you can go ahead and repair or rebuild, orange is unsure and red is the government will be reclaiming the land so you will be moving and your home being destroyed. White is yet to be assessed.

Just imagine living in a home for 30-40 years and suddenly you have to go. This is the situation many are faced with. Homes they have tended the garden of for all those years. There favourite plants destroyed in what took seconds of mother nature’s power.

Each time you feel a shake your body stills as you tense up in case it is another of the ‘big one’s'…

So what about the accommodation in Christchurch?

The danger areas are closed so you will find the accommodation that is open now is standing up to the quakes and it is quite unlikely that you will experience a major shake. If you are at all nervous about the shakes I would go for low rise accommodation out to the west.

Unlike parts of New Zealand further north, Christchurchhas all seasons of the year. The deciduous English trees stretch their bare branches to the sky in the clear frosty days of winter. Usually a snowfall will cover the city in white once or more during the winter.

Later the trees will become green-tipped and then turn into blossom during spring. The city is beautiful with colourful flowers a great time to visit the Garden City of New Zealand.

During the long summer months the hot norwesterly flows down from the Southern Alps and the green trees gradually fade. The warm summer invites people to spend time at the rivers, beaches or the pools. Most of the main rivers in the countryside around Christchurch are braided rivers with clear water.

The trees paint the city in brilliant reds and oranges for the autumn season and the leaves start to fall as we head back to winter.

Each season sees residents and visitors making the most of the climate. Lakes, mountains, beaches and rivers are all within a few hours drive from the city. Christchurch itself is perfect for cycling around, being set on the Canterbury plains it is basically flat you can hire a bicycle and go where the mood takes you.

Christchurch has all seasons and this may help you decide when you would like to stay.

Some establishments encourage you to stay with children, others are really not interested in helping you and staying at these can make for a lower standard of holiday. There are seven things that are well worth thinking about before you do anything else when looking for family accommodation.

1. Are the Facilities Suitable for Child/ren – Check out exactly what facilities are available at the accommodation premises. Do they suit the age bracket of your children?

An example here is one place that we stayed when travelling with young children. It kept us on edge the whole time – the bedrooms were all upstairs and a child could fit through the gap in the railings around the staircase. Like all children they were attracted to the stairs!

What is the swimming pool like? Is it suitable for your child/ren and their swimming abilities?

2. Child Care When Travelling – When hotels say they provide child care, make sure you check it out first. Some only cover child care for a couple of hours a day. Other places only run if they have minimum numbers. Check out anyone caring for your child/ren – make sure they are reputable!

3. Cellphone – Take your cellphone and get access for the country that you are in just in case you are away from your child/ren at any stage. If your children are in care somewhere, it is reassuring for you and your children that you can be contacted.

4. Entertainment for Your Child – If the establishment has cable TV – do they have children’s channels? Some don’t. Do they have a DVD player and children’s DVD’s available for hire on the premises or somewhere close? You may even like to take some with you.

With school age children, finding a place where your children, the social creatures that they are can find other children to play with. You may be surprised at how quickly close friends can be made – you get the opportunity to meet other parents too. I have some long term friends that were met like this.

5. Cooking Facilities – Some times it can be more convenient to have cooking facilities at the place you are staying. Make sure you consider all your options.

6. Catering for Babies – Travelling with babies requires a full check list of its own. Stop for a minute and think about how you will deal with each aspect of looking after bubs on your journey.

7. Backups for Care in Place – If you have child care organised while you are away and you are going to attend something that is fixed while your child/ren are in care – have a back up plan in place. What will happen if your event goes on longer than was originally intended?

These are all points to consider when looking for family accommodation for your Christchurch New Zealand Holiday.

The Copthorne Hotel in Durham Street only opened recently following repairs and reinforcement after the 4^th September 2010 earthquake. Once again this hotel has been deemed unsafe for occupation at the moment.

The Copthorne Hotel Christchurch Central located across from Victoria Square had been issued with a restricted use notice. A more detailed structural inspection is required.

The Millennium Hotel Christchurch in the Square at the back beside the damaged Christchurch Cathedral has been cleared for re-entry once the cordons around the Central Business District (CBD) are lifted. At this stage there is no definite date for removal of the cordons.

The Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) run the Crowne Plaza Christchurch, Holiday Inn City Centre Christchurch and Holiday Inn on Avon.

This group have all sustained differing degrees of damage and remain closed until a detailed assessment can be undertaken by authorities.

An email address has been established for guests who were staying in the hotels at the time of the earthquake and who are now enquiring about the retrieval of their belongings. Stonehurst Backpackers

The centre of the Christchurch Central Business District (CBD) is still currently closed to the public. Even business owners are not allowed into the area for safety reasons. Rescue recovery work is continuing. The death toll is currently 166.

I understand that a percentage of accommodation in the area will need to be demolished. Most of the accommodation that is affected is hotel accommodation, backpackers and bed and breakfast style accommodation.

There is still a large amount of accommodation to the north and west of the city that only had minimal damage and more accommodation that is unaffected. To really understand this you need to realize that although the earthquake and aftershocks were felt widely, most of the damage was in the CBD, on the hills and to the east of the city.

My own home received significant damage inside yet we moved to a place five minutes away for a few nights and I was amazed at how little you felt the aftershocks there in comparison with our home. Listening to locals I have also learned that people in some parts of the city had no idea of the damage at first as the 6.3 aftershock seemed just like another mild shock.

One thing about the earthquake is that there was some very unusual damage. Things happened that defied logic. Many parts of Christchurch had very little damage while isolated pockets suffered severely.

The backpackers market was one of the most disrupted types of accommodation. Charlie Bs, Cokers Hotel and X-Base, three of the biggest backpackers all sustained damage impacting on the business. I will be going through Christchurch accomodation properties and bringing you up-to-date feedback from them on their properties.

It is great to see that the YMCA is fully operational including their backpacker accommodation. Another smaller property servicing the backpackers is Thomass Hotel in Hereford Street. This is an old wooden property and although they did lose a couple of brick chimneys, they are back to normal now.

Many central Christchurch properties lost their chimneys; all are very unlikely to be replaced. The earthquake really has cleaned up a lot of the older, less stable buildings and although we have lost character buildings I am sure there will be some exciting new developments built.

Christchurch Earthquake

Another type of property that has been affected by the earthquake is the B&B (bed and breakfast) market. We will be featuring many of these in future posts on this site.

The odd larger hotel has not escaped damage either. It surprised me when I went to the Copthorne Hotel on the corner of Durham and Kilmore Streets late last week to find that it had restricted access. The other two Copthorne Hotels seem to be functioning as normal and we will let you know more on this news.
