Is the Wizard of Canterbury (Christchurch, NZ) still alive?

In the 70’s I remember a man from Melbourne University whos name was Ian Brackenridge (I think) moved to Christchurch, NZ. He was also known as the Wizard of Canterbury. He would be in the City Square in Christchurch, New Zealand rallying up the people. He also had many followers. Is he still around?

He was there last summer

If Christchurch is best NZ retirement spot, which city in Australia would compare favorably with her ?

We are an Italian couple who decided to roam the globe for a few years following retirement, currently residing in Malaysia, and seriously looking to find a place to settle down. We like Australasia a lot. Very different from Europe and relatively unspoiled and carefree, just what “the Doctor ordered”.

We enjoy NZ a lot, but summers are short. Only visited Perth last year for a few days, but have great expectations for Oz. How about Adelaide, for example. Any ideas ? Suggestions ?. Any input would be appreciated. TIA ! Thad

I would suggest that Adelaide can have long winters so if that is what you are trying to avoid, stay clear. Good retirement spots: Coffs Harbour and surrounding towns (Urunga, Bellingen, Valla etc) NSW – the atmosphere in the smaller towns is very laid back – nice weather, and Coffs Harbour provides the conveniences you need. Sunshine Coast, Qld – nice warm weather, very beachy area. But there are also hinterland areas if you prefer which are just so seet (Maleny, Montville etc are very country cottage arts and craftsy kind of places)

What do you know about Ferrymead Railway, in Christchurch, NZ ?

We are attending a 3day Event at Ferrymead Historic Park. Which is entitled “Trains Extravaganza”. Anyone from NZ or local going to this ?

I am usually the Crossing Keeper at Ferrymead Historic Park, Christchurch NZ.

The Ferrymead Railway is a New Zealand heritage railway built upon the formation of New Zealand’s first public railway, the line from Ferrymead to Christchurch, which opened in 1863.

On the opening of the line to Lyttelton on 9 December 1867, the Ferrymead Railway became the Ferrymead Branch and was closed shortly thereafter.

In 1964, rail enthusiasts began relaying track on the historic formation and the Ferrymead Railway officially opened in 1977. It now operates steam, diesel and electric trains regularly and is recognised throughout as one of the most significant rail preservation sites.

Affluent nice = Fendalton, Cashmere, Merivale, Ilam, Mt Pleasant, Northwood, Travisland, Nunweek Park.

I’m looking to buy a house in Christchurch, NZ what suburbs are affordable and have good publice transport?

I’m looking to buy a house in Christchurch NZ. I want somewhere near the city centre that is affordable and also has a good public transport system as I can’t drive. Walking distance from the city would be best? Any suggestions? I have no idea where are the nice places!

Riccarton should fit your requirements. Good commercial and residential mix plus on main bus route. Inner city living has its disadvantages while Riccarton is barely a couple of kms from city.

Editors Comment – My suggestion would be St Albans. Riccarton is okay too, although St Albans is probably a little closer to most of the city. Parts of both St Albans and Riccarton are well serviced by the around and across town bus routes – the Orbiter and the Metro Star.

We’ve got a friend who is planning on holidaying with her sister, and needs to find a good spot in between them both, obviously this place needs to be a “popular” destination, so flights can be sought..etc

What about San Francisco?

Flights take 16-20 hours from both locations, and there is plenty to do. Also, petrol is cheaper if cost is an issue.
