If travelling by air in a family group, is the checked in luggage weighed collectively or individually?

I am going overseas travelling with family by air, my husband and 3 children travelling (economy) . If our baggage allowance is 20kg each, will all our luggage be weighed collectively at the check-in counter – so that we can take up to 100kg or do they weigh each persons luggage separately?

Thanks for your helpful answers everyone!

Most airlines weigh luggage on a per ticket basis, so you could check 20kg and so could one of your children, but you couldn’t check 38kg and 2kg for your child. Each is usually weighed separately.

Also, if you are changing to an aircraft operated by a different company, they may have different policies on checked luggage. Many airlines have exact rules about checked luggage on their website.

  1. It is always separately per paid ticket. So each child will need their own suitcase.

Do not take one big one or you will pay a fee.

If I may also suggest that if your children are small and many suitcases will be difficult….pack lightly and wash clothes in hotel or have a laundry service do them.

It's much better than taking things you don't need and won't use. Have fun.

  3. Probably separate, but you can choose what luggage gets weighed together for each person. That will help avoid overcharge unless any single bag is over the limit.
